Afghan Whigs - Bonnie & Clyde EP

The only annoying thing about Rhino records excellent Afghan Whigs retrospective that came out this year (actually, it was annoying that no dvd was released, but we'll forget that for now), was that no rarities compilation came out at the same time. Now we all know that the Whigs were one of the most sexy, asskickingly heavy attituded mothers of the 90s, but sadly a lot of fans don't have access to some of the supergreat stuff they released as bsides. As many fans know, Mr Greg Dulli is a big fan of that sacred institution known as the 'cover version', and long before his post-Whigs band The Twilight Singers released their rather good She Loves You covers set, the Whigs were pumping out great versions of soul/funk/whatever classics on nearly all of their singles and EPs. Thus, tonight I present you with four of such excellent pieces of pure-gold-rock. These four tracks came out on 1996's Bonnie & Clyde EP, the lead track of which was Going To Town, which you can get by going to town and buying their Black Love LP. Cheers.

Afghan Whigs - Creep : TLC cover
Afghan Whigs - I Want To Go To Sleep : Harold Chichester cover
Afghan Whigs - If I Only Had A Heart : from the movie The Wizard Of Oz (1939). Originally sung by Jack Haley (the Tin Woodman) and Adriana Caselotti (Juliet)
Afghan Whigs - You've Changed : recorded by Nat King Cole, Billie Holiday, Buddy Rich, Babs Gonzales and more...

If you go to Twilight Singers' bassist Scott Ford's website at, you can download a podcast with an unreleased Whigs demo from the UPTOWN AVONDALE sessions. It's of the Five Stairsteps' "Ooh Child" and it fucking KILLS.
