MP3: Grace Potter & The Nocturnals - Nothing But The Water

Grace Potter & The Nocturnals hail from Vermont, and in the last few years they've been gaining a rather big live following throughout the U.S. Their blend of soul/funk/blues/country/gospel/every-other-genre tinged Americana as demonstrated on their new record, Nothing But The Water, is pretty darn fine, although I'd suggest that it hints at much bigger things to come (especially considering how Potter herself is only 22). Which also happens to be my age. It's pretty odd when you get to the age where successful musicians are actually the same age or younger than you. Slightly frightening.

Below are links to three of my favourite tunes from the record, a slowy called All But One with some fine piano/guiar interplay which might remind you of Cat Power when she's not being boring, and the albums closing tracks, Nothing But The Water 1 and 2, which seem to do what that Jenny Lewis album wasn't trying to do in a much better way. Hope you like them, and if you do, go check out their myspace and listen to some more. The new record is out now, self-released on the band's Ragged Company Records, and has been produced in collaboration with Steve Marcussen (who has also worked with My Morning Jacket). Tour dates and more at the band's official site.

Believe me, it's much more frightening when most musicians are quite younger than you, or much younger than you, or just 'young'.
