MP3: Cay / Better Than Myself & Nature Creates Freaks

Cay were a London four piece who released a series of singles and then one album, called Nature Creates Freaks, around 1998-2000. Debut single Better Than Myself came out on Org Records and started getting played on the Evening Session regularly, and thats the first mp3 below. Neurons Like Brandy was the second single, and the first on EastWest records. Princes and Princesses was the third single, and a pretty damn good one at that.

Obviously the band got lazy comparisons to Hole, which is a shame because I (not being a big Hole fan) thought they were far far better. Oh and singer Anet Mook wasn't Courtney Love, so that helped too. I believe I saw them four times, and each time they were really rather great. I believe one night in Portsmouth they were supported by a pre-Showbiz Muse, so that was a fantastic show. Another was at Southampton Uni with Feeder and Subcircus (now there's another forgotten band for you). The third was again in Portsmouth with My Vitriol (and also would have been with Crashland if they'd turned up).

I think the album really stands up as a piece, though have to say I prefer the (few) quieter songs to the faster stuff. The second song here, Nature Creates Freaks, was another single, and I think demonstrates the range they had as a band quite well. As far as I remember the band were dropped by EastWest after poor album sales, and then returned to Org for a final single, Resurrexit, played earlyish on a Friday(?) at Reading 2000, and then disappeared off the face of the earth. Rumours are that drug problems didn't exactly help with the bands rise and subsequent fall, but as I don't want nasty emails from ex-band members, I won't go on about it ;-).

If you want some more info, you can check out an interview with singer/guitarist Anet, this very out of date unofficial fansite, a contemporary fan review, or check out or some live pictures. Enjoy.

hi jamie
you site is a brilliant idea. I was a massive fan of Cay when they first emerged, can even remember first hearing them on John Peel - was blown away. THe album is also excellent, as is the single they followed this album up with on ORG records when they got dropped, Resurrexit. Anet's voice was great.

Also cheers for the trip down memory lane and the Marion and Symposium mp3s. a great and worthwhile site- i discovered it via Drowned in Sound.

bye! alex

Well, I was listening to Cay on the way to work the other day and wondering what had become of them. Some great singles, a great, if flawed album (I can't agree that the slower songs work best) then they vanished. Still, probably that's better than releasing a crappy follow up. I saw them live twice, and Anet Mook had probably the best voice in showbiz.

Hi Jamie,
just found your site. I love Cay & agree with the comments made. I think that if they had kept going they would have become huge. Anet really is like no one else I've seen or heard in a long while. It would be interesting to know what has become of her & Nick, they made a great combination. I've got that first single on 'Org' in the cardboard cover, plus several others & the album. I have all the 'Peel Session' songs on mp3 & have them for download on 'Kazaa' if you're interested.

Cheers, HMK.
