MP3: Novelty hit anyone? Ray Stevens has a few...
Everyone likes a novelty hit right? Right? Especially if its completely tasteless and over the top? Right? RIGHT??? You'll have to excuse me today, i'm a bit bogged down with Uni work and my brain couldn't handle doing a full on article, thus you get a treat from my considerably odd archives.
Ray Stevens was born in 1939 in Clarksdale, Georgie, and has had worldwide hits with his mixture of country, pop and bizarre novelty songwriting. You may have heard 'The Streak', the totally non-xenophobic 'Ahab The Arab', the lovely 'Jeremiah Peabody's Polyunsaturated Quick-Dissolving, Fast-Acting Pleasant-Tasting Green and Purple Pills' (holding the record as the longest titled song to hit the American top 40), or even the more recent 'Osama Yo Mama' from 2002. Purveyor of high class musical goods, Stevens has had about 100 albums (i'm not exagerating, check out Wikipedia for proof), and has even won two grammys.
The song i've decided to give you is the absolutely mindf*ckingly bizarre 'Bridget The Midget (Queen Of The Blues)'. Not only did Ray predict the stage name of a notorious diminutive porn star, he also wrote one of the weirdest songs ever to hit the British top 5. Soon afterwards Ray would have his own television program, which although it only ran for a short time, is famous for introducing Steve Martin to the world (by which I mean the Steve Martin who made The Jerk and Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, not his identical robot twin of Cheaper By The Dozen fame).
Hopefully tomorrow i'll have time to do my first Manics post, or I might do some more rock movie stuff, and remember that if you don't come back to look at those, there are 3000 more Ray Stevens songs I could put up instead. You've been warned.
