MP3: Idlewild - Chandelier / When I Argue I See Shapes

Idlewild were one of the first bands I got into in a big way, all the way back in 1997/8. The first thing I bought was the When I Argue I See Shapes single, which remains one of my favourite singles of all time, and that set me off on a search for every other Idlewild release I could possibly find. I saw them a bunch of times, but sadly they got progressively worse the longer they went on. Their progression on record was slightly different, as their albums 'matured' but the quality of the songwriting meant that they were often just as compelling as the more anarchic early material. Live however they were a bit of a bore on those later tours (especially when playing for an hour and a half). The band went through tons of changes, Roddy disappeared slightly up his own arse, and sadly they split late last year. To be honest I didn't even buy their last album, the rather weak Warnings/Promises, but I was still kind of sad to see one of the bands that got me into the indie scene falling victim to major label woes (commercialising, sales failing, members leaving, split).

This is basically my mini epitaph for them in MP3 form. Up for download are both sides of the now megarare Chandelier 7", which was their second single and didn't appear on any albums, as well as the ultra classic fantastic When I Argue I See Shapes which featured on their first full length, 1998's quite great Hope Is Important. I don't think there are really many indie singles i've heard that have quite the energy and enthusiasm of this one. It makes no sense, yes, but what about those melodies! MASSIVE! HOOKS GALORE! and the bit where it SHAPES! goes SHAPES! for no SHAPES! reason! ! ! ! Did the Liberfuckingtines ever SHAPES! do anything 1% as good as this?!?!?! NO!

For more Idlewild info you can check out the rather good biography on Wikipedia or their still functioning official site. Enjoy. And play these songs loud.

I fell in love when Steve Lamacq played 'Last Night I Missed All the Fireworks' on the Evening Session, and 'Captain' is pretty a perfect twenty minutes of music. The NME described their live shows as being like a flight of stairs falling down a flight of stairs, which describes them pretty well. I saw them many times in their own right, as a support act and at festivals, and they were never less than brilliant. However, the last of their gigs I went to, about a year ago, was an acoustic affair which, while good in itself, could never match the sheer energy and speed of their early punk period.

Oooh, proper single version of 'When I Argue...' thanks! I may have to go and buy some stuff from one of the other posts now.

I'm more of a later-Idlewild fan myself, although to some extent I got into the thrashier bits through the later stuff. I only bought Warnings/Promises when it was £1:96 on Amazon although I have most of the singles from it.

hi i believe you said after their first stuff they went down hill ill beg to differ as i thought their first album was a band trying to sound like nirvana and not being themselves a 100 broken window's did sound like nirvana but bloody one of the best albums of all time then their U2, Rem sounding album A Remote Part was an still is today a classic album with the closing song being my favorite Scottish Fiction.
Next warning's and promises i hated this at first then it started to get to me i kept going back to it and wow what a record this is their best by far for me n my fav song of all time on here its To long awake n why this was not a single i don't no its the most addictive song ive ever been addicted to n this album is full of gems such as love steals us from loneliness, El Capitan, The Space between all things, blame it on your obvious ways wow this album is perfect for me now Idlewild for me are sounding more like their real selves not just imitating american bands on this album.
Make Another World is my third favorite album its pretty good a fine attempt more rockier than warnings n proms.
Singles No Emotion and Make Another World see the lads on fine form here and future works and closing song finished it remains also stand out and for me the finest moment on this album is the classic punky "Ghost in the Arcade" wow what guitar work on this song.
Post Electric Blues im just getting into this album its got some nice ballads on it.
The Night will bring you back to life plus bring me back to the islands but id say this is their weakest album to day so far hope this changes the more i listen to it ps hope i didn't piss ye off i just like their latter stuff thats all. goodbye for now n take care god bless.
