NME Clean Sweep 1998 - Therapy?, Spiritualized with Suicide, Idlewild, Super Furries, Mogwai, Deftones!
Aaah now this CD takes me back. Given away free in the NME in February 1998 to commemorate a series of shows they had sponsored at the London Astoria in the previous month, it contains all live recordings from a selection of bands that played, and includes some really stunning performances amongst some inevitable drek. I've extracted some of my favourites, so my apologies go out to those people who see their favourite band in the sleeve picture above but not below. We have prime Super Furries from the Radiator era, Idlewild from a time when the 'A flight of stairs falling down a flight of stairs' description was still valid, Deftones during what in my opinion was their best era, one of my very favourite Mogwai live performances eeeever, Therapy? with a track from their mucho underrated Semi-Detached record, and finally Spiritualized teaming up with Suicide for a runthrough of the legendary Rocket USA. Wowza, as they said in the 90s.
Deftones - My Own Summer (Shove It) (live)
Idlewild - You Just Have To Be Who You Are (live)
Mogwai - Ex Cowboy (live)
Spiritualized with Suicide - Rocket USA (live)
Super Furry Animals - Bad Behaviour (live)
Therapy - Tightrope Walker (live)

Mogwai's live version of "Ex Cowboy" from this disc is fantastic! The Super Furries "Bad Behaviour" is good. I always liked the Dawn of the Replicants version of "Radars" on here, too, which is how I discovered them.
Back in '98, I loved this cd so much i bought an extra copy of that NME to keep a spare in case the first disc got scratched up!
Great to hear these tracks again.
damn, i was at that mogwai gig - spectacular performance. pavement and gorky's were also on the bill that night. back when the nme knew what it was doing.
stuff like this is why the runout groove is amazing...
