MP3: "The Sounds Machine EP3" - 1 - Steve Earle

Another week, another Sounds giveaway 7" to listen to. This one is called The Sounds Machine EP3, and like the last one was given away in 1988. As I explained before, Sounds was one of the original four of the modern British music weeklys (along with the NME, Melody Maker and Kerrang), and began publishing in October 1970. It was known for covering more metal, punk and oi than the Maker and the NME, which maybe explains how it was finally cornered out of the market due to competition from the other three, folding due to severe lack of circulation in April 1991.

First up is a live track from country legend Steve Earle. The song is San Antonio Girl, this recording was made at West Park, Chicago in 1988, and the studio version of this song featured on Steve's 1987 album with The Dukes, 'Exit O'. Earle is of course one of the leading singer/songwriters who stood out from the usually conservative country crowd to attack Bush with 2004's excellent 'The Revolution Starts Now' record. Starting out in 1975 by contributing to recordings by Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark and Emmylou Harris, Earle has gone on to write and record 11 studio albums to date, almost had a song of his recorded by Elvis, and has worked with the Supersuckers and the legendary Jason & The Scorchers.

For more info on Steve you can check out his official website, this rather good unofficial site, or this biography on Wikipedia. Next track from this Sounds EP will be up tomorrow night and comes from the fantastic McCarthy. Enjoy.
