Video: William S. Burroughs - Ah Pook Is Here & No More Stalins, No More Hitlers
Something a bit different today. I'm a massive Burroughs fan but somehow I only recently came across Philip Hunt's amazing animation set to Burroughs classic Ah Pook and No More Stalins skits. I've always thought Cronenberg's Naked Lunch was a bit of a letdown in terms of really representing Burroughs work, as the director seems to reuse some of his old body horror stuff and mix it with some of Bill's life, but never quite seems to capture the mood of the Lunch material or the cutups. Anyway on this video you get the legendary dulcet tones of the man himself and some really quite great animation, and its well worth a look whether you're a fan or not. Burroughs was quite interesting musically actually, recording stuff with Kurt Cobain, Sonic Youth (on Dead City Radio), Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy (on Spare Ass Annie) and many others. Oh! and of course on the X-Files movie soundtrack he did a nice perverted version of R.E.M.'s Star Me Kitten which is well worth seeking out. There's more info on the origins of this animation at the IMDB, and you can get some info on Burroughs at either Wikipedia or at The Beat Page. Lovely.
