MP3: Gorky's Zygotic Mynci - Let's Get Together (In Our Minds)
Gorky's Zygotic Mynci are one of the must underrated Welsh bands of the 90s (and 00s!). Singing sometimes in English and sometimes in Welsh, despite some great critical notices the band have failed to ever have a top 40 singles, even after 2000's Poodle Rockin' started getting quite a bit of airplay. To date the band have released nine studio albums, the best of which are probably 1997's Barafundle and it's followup, 1998's Gorky 5. Some of the highlights of that record include the beautiful single Sweet Johnny and Hush The Warmth, which is probably my favourite song of theirs other than the single i'm posting today, which is Let's Get Together (In Our Minds). It's one of the loveliest summer pop songs i've ever heard, and goes to demonstrate just how lovely most Welsh bands are (remember I said most). I've also put up the bsides, both of which are worth a listen. Sadly the single peaked at number 43 in the charts back in July of 1998. I think the band are currently on hiatus, and frontman Euros Childs has just released his solo debut, Chops, which came out on Wichita a few months back and is very very good.
The very cool Gorky's official website is well worth a look, as they've just started a big archive section featuring lots of rare audio and video. Other than two rather out of date but still worthy fansites can be seen here and here.

Ooh, and I was just listening to old 45 of this the other day. Always a joy to see Gorky's get some recognition, and all the more so this song which isn't their most famous (even relatively speaking!) but has always been a personal favourite. Sadly, they're beyond the remit of my Hit Parade blog, though. However, they can claim the record for most consecutive Top 75 singles without ever denting the Naughty 40.
Just putting my pedant's hat on for a moment, though, the album's actually called Gorky 5 (which is of course pronounced "Gorky Pimp" in Welsh). I recommened Spanish Dance Troupe as well.
Seems Chris beat me to the top 75 fact, but I can still trump him by mentioning that they're the only act to have four top 50 singles without one going top 40 - Patio Song 41, Diamond Dew 42, Young Girls And Happy Endings 49, this 44.
the official website posted a message just today saying they are splitting up! what a timely post this was, i guess. and yes, they are (were) extremely underrated, much obscured in a super furry shadow.
