MP3: Guided By Voices - Bee Thousand

I'm currently completely obsessed with Guided By Voices' 1994 classic Bee Thousand. I'd listened to it a bunch of times before, but it's only been in the last week where i've been playing it every day, in fact it's getting almost as much as listening time as The Drift. It's widely considered to be the band's best album, and I think it's because it's got just the right mixture of lo-fi fun and great melodies. 20 songs in about 35 minutes means that there's not really any way to get bored, and when those songs are so damned good it just becomes a really enjoyable listening experience. The album was re-released as a director's cut 3CD set in 2004, which i've yet to track down, but i'm very much looking forward to hearing some alt. cuts of these songs. Tractor Rape Chain is quickly becoming one of my favourite songs ever. It's soooooooooo good. I think you can definitely hear the reason why GBV were so influential on the whole lo-fi scene from this album. In particular a couple of songs totally remind me of Neutral Milk Hotel, and it just makes me wish I was around at the time to see them.
