Help Needed Re: History of the Joiners Arms

Hi folks. Music journalist Oliver Gray has been commissioned to write a history of the Southampton Joiners Arms, one of my favourite venues, and definitely the best and longest running in the city. I was lucky enough to see bands like Muse and At The Drive-In at the joiners in front of crowds of less than a hundred, and over the years it's had some pretty amazing bands playing. Oliver needs the help of Joiners regulars, and I offered to post his press release here. If you can help, get in touch, because it sounds like a really worth project. Here it is:

Appeal for contributions

Since opening as a music venue in 1968, the Joiners in Southampton's St Mary Street has achieved legendary status in the music world, having played host to such luminaries as Oasis, Radiohead, Green Day, The Verve, Primal Scream, Suede, P J Harvey, The Manic Street Preachers, Coldplay, The Libertines and Franz Ferdinand, to name but a few. Richard Ashcroft cites the Joiners as the venue of his greatest ever performance, the Manic Street Preachers signed their record deal there and Oasis played there for £100. And every day of the week, it stays loyal to the grass roots as it plays host to local and up-and-coming bands.

  • Do you love the Joiners? Have you been a regular customer? Do you know people who have attended legendary gigs there?

The history of the Joiners is now being written and we want it to be as comprehensive and entertaining as it can possibly be.

Do you have a story to tell? Can you help us with any information?

  • We need: Exact dates and line-ups of any gigs at the Joiners over the last 40 years. Most documentation has gone missing as landlords have come and gone, so absolutely anything is useful to us.

  • We also need stories, preferably amusing ones of amazing gigs and encounters with the stars.

If you have played at the Joiners and have any good stories to tell, we want to hear from you. If you are now an international megastar, don’t be shy!

And above all, we need photos and other memorabilia.
All info will be credited and lovingly looked after.

Music writer Oliver Gray, himself a Joiners regular, has been commissioned to write the definitive history of the Joiners. We’d be very grateful for any publicity about the project which might lead people to provide us with material. Oliver is of course available for interview. Anyone who would like to contribute is invited to Email oliver@revilolang.com.

So there we have it folks. Get emailing all you Joiners regulars!
