MP3: American Music Club - Everclear
American Music Club are one of those bands that i've always thought I should be a bigger fan of, but have never really become one of my favourites despite the fact that there's not really anything I dislike about them, and in fact quite a lot I really like. Somehow all the bits don't mesh for me. Anyway the band formed in 1983 and soon became (along with Red House Painters) one of the leading bands in what would losely be known as the Slowcore or Sadcore genre. Hailing from San Francisco, the band are led by singer/songwriter Mark Eitzel, and though the lineup has changed around a bit, he's always been the real leader of the group. Their debut was 1985's The Restless Stranger, which was followed by 1987's Engine, but it was not until 1988's California that the band would start to gain a really big following.
The songs i've uploaded are all from 1991's Everclear, which is generally regarded as the band's best LP. I've always found it to be slightly lacking, but the more I listen to it the more I see why the band would have inspired a really dedicated following, especially considering the reputation they had as being a really great live band. The critical reception of that album was enough to get the band signed to A&M, and their debut for that label was 1993's Mercury, which despite good reviews was a slow seller. The same happened for 1994's San Francisco, and A&M quickly dropped the band, which soon led to their breakup. However in 2003 (which is three years ago. three years!), the band got back together and released a newie, Love Songs For Patriots, which is really rather good. Hope you like the songs, and if you do you can buy it here. You can get more AMC info at Wikipedia, or their official site, oooor this really good unofficial site. Enjoy.
