Peel Session: Melys (2000)

Aaah Melys. One of the great underrated Welsh indie bands of the late 90s and early 00s. Despite an admirable run of seven Peel sessions, the four piece from Betws-y-Coed in Conwy, Wales have never achieved the success of some of their countrypeople, even during the wave of indie success enjoyed by the Manics, Super Furry Animals, Catatonia, Stereophonics and a few others in the Britpop and post-Britpop eras. They formed in 1996 and quickly released the Fragile EP, which introduced their mixture of Swervedriver/Ride style shoegaze (with a dash of Yo La Tengo i might add) and Sundays style fem-pop to the world. My keyboard batteries are dying so i'll have to finish this up quickly (oh how unprofessional). They went on to minor indie success, releasing five albums, the last of which was 2005's Life's Too Short. Despite thinking that they had split up, and indeed their official website having not been updated for 2 years, there's nothing official anywhere and wikipedia says they're still going, so good luck to 'em! This session was recorded on the 19th December 1999 and broadcast during January of 2000. Enjoy.
