New Artist Alert: Mumpsy
The lovely folks over at Post Records bunged me a bunch of a goodies through the post this week, and one of the first things that caught my ear was a cd of tracks by an artist going under the name of Mumpsy. That's right, 'Mumpsy'. Let's move on. Mumpsy's music (for he is but a man!) is not half as twee as his name. But it is a bit twee. Twee in a good way though. In a Belle & Sebastian way. In a McCarthy way. Got it? There's also a heavy dose of Shins/Sufjan sixties-esque pop hook galore going on.
Real name Jeff Ilgenfritz (which personally I think is a far more ROCK name), Mumpsy hails from Orlando and started making music in 2004, since when he's released a full length on Post called The Exuberance of Peachtree and contributed a few songs to compilations here and there. In the next few months he's be releasing a new EP called 3 People on the very same label, all of which I've heard and enjoyed very very much. Sparkling pop hooks, some nice lyrics, and a lot of hats. And there's nothing wrong with hats. You can get more info on Mumpsy at his myspazz or at the Post website.
Here's a few songs, one from the forthcoming EP, and the other, which is also on the EP but only if you buy it online (ie it's not on the plastic/shellac!). Oddness. Hope you like them!

I'm a big fan of Mumpsy. His voice kind of reminds me of Jeremy Enigk on Return of the Frog Queen.
